Type Locality and Naming

SW Algeria. The formation is well exposed north of Ain Tiouendjiguine, at Ain Behaga, Adrar Morrat and Tes Ereghet (Wendt et al., 2006).

Synonym: Named “Argiles de Khenig” by Conrad (1984). Temertasset Fm.

Lithology and Thickness

The Argiles de Temertasset Fm ranges from 500m-1100m in thickness, and is made up of calcareous mudstone characterized by up to five skeletal calcareous packstone layers intercalated in the monotonous shale sequence (Wendt et al., 2006).

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It conformably overlies the Gres de Mehden Yahya Fm.

Upper contact

It is conformably overlain by the Gres de Khenig Fm.

Fossils

Brachiopods, common pelecypods and orthoconic nautiloids, ostracods, rare bellerophontids and crinoids, and fish remains.
